Brother Jun Patricio asks, “When a law of the land differs from the laws of God, what will be our position?” Since our brother doesn’t come out with specific cases, we bring out major developments in our modern society.

Theologians and Bible students have different backgrounds and different orientations. They start with various assumptions and come out with different conclusions. There are existentialist theologians, liberal theologians, universalists, humanists, fundamentalists, conservatives, etc. We now live in a post modern and pluralist society. So we must expect the presence of varied ideas.

Our topic for this post is HOMOSEXUALITY. Homosexuality is defined as “(1) Sexual attraction toward a person of the same sex. (2) Sexual relations between persons of the same sex.”  (Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary)

Medical scientists and social scientists are divided on the cause of homosexuality. On one hand some believe that this thing is genetically derived while others say it is a psychological development in an individual. Some believe that effeminateness is hormonally induced as much as femininity is basically hormonal.  Others, however, say effeminateness could be a psychological escape from reality.

In the most recent election, a party list called “Ang Ladlad” came out for the advocacy of the rights of the third sex. “Ladlad” used as a verb in the Iloco dialect suggests a position of the human body being helplessly pushed down on the ground or on the floor by another. But in the context of our modern society, the verb now takes the opposite meaning. Instead of being helplessly pushed down by another, it means being leisurely and pleasurably pushed down on the ground or on the floor or on a bed by same sex partners.

We are all familiar with a noontime TV show host who is a transvestite. He was a male actor in the past, but now parades herself as a female performer. You are familiar with a TV host who specializes in the entertainment business who openly declares having a “live-in partner” of the same gender.  Across the sea, we hear and read about “same sex marriages” being legalized in several states of the Union of the US.

Let’s review some passages which prohibit homosexuality.

Leviticus 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” (NKJV) The New Living Translation says: “Do not practice homosexuality. It is a detestable sin.”

Leviticus 20:13, “If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.” (NKJV) The NLT says: “The penalty for homosexual acts is death to both parties. They have committed a detestable act and are guilty of a capital offense.”

Deuteronomy  23:17, “There shall be no ritual harlot of the daughters of Israel, or a perverted one of the sons of Israel.” (Footnote: Heb. Qedesha, feminie of qadesh. Hebrew: qadesh, one practicing sodomy and prostitution in religious rituals.-NKJV) The NLT says: “No Israelite man or woman may ever become a temple prostitute.”

Judges 19:22, “As they were enjoying themselves, suddenly certain men of the city, perverted men, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, ‘Bring out the man who came to your house, that we may know him carnally.” (NKJV) The NLT says: “While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men in the town surrounded the house. They began beating at the door and shouting to the old man, ‘Bring out the man who is staying with you so we can have sex with him.” (Read the rest of chapter 19 to see the perversion of these men. Read chapter 20 on how the tribe of Benjamin was punished for this crime of bestiality.)

Romans 1:26, 27 condemns same sex marriages and homosexuality. The NLT says: “That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationship with women, burned with lust of for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved.”

We read 1 Cor. 6:9, “… Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers – none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God.” (NLT)

1 Thes. 4:4-5, “Then each of you will control your body and live in holiness and honor – not in lustful passion as the pagans do, in their ignorance of God and his ways.”

Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” The NLT says: “Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.”

Ephesians 5:22-33 talks about husband-wife (male-female) partnership in marriage. This is understood as God’s arrangement and law. Male and female should be the parties in marriage. That is how God created Adam and Eve in the beginning.  Our present Family Code also specifies a male-female partnership in marriage. But our Philippine society is moving towards a change. Modern society no longer frowns upon open homosexuality. Modern society should not change any God-given law. Where do Churches of Christ preachers stand?
